Tony-winning 'Copenhagen' examines meeting of two physicistsWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Michael Frayn's Tony Award-winning play "Copenhagen" will be presented at 8 p.m. Friday, April 12, in Loeb Playhouse. Admission is $26 for general public, $20 for Purdue students and children K-12. Tickets can be purchased at Purdue box offices or charged by phone at (765) 494-3933 or (800) 914-SHOW. "Copenhagen" is presented by Purdue Convocations. Winner of the prestigious London Evening Standard Award for Best Play in 1988 and the 2000 Tony Award for Best Play, "Copenhagen" is inspired by actual events that have intrigued and baffled historians for more than 50 years – a 1941 meeting between two brilliant physicists and longtime friends whose work together had opened the way to the atom, but who were now on opposite sides of World War II. German physicist Werner Heisenberg made a covert trip to see his Danish counterpart Niels Bohr and his wife, Margrethe, in Copenhagen. The play examines multiple possibilities as to why Heisenberg went to Denmark and what the two men may have said to each other. Playwright Frayn says, "'Copenhagen' asks what happened at this pivotal meeting that was a defining moment of the modern nuclear age." Frayn is best known for his Broadway hits "Noises Off" and "Benefactors," as well as for his recently published best-selling novel, "Headlong." John Peter of the London Sunday Times has called "Copenhagen" Frayn's best play. This production features Sean Arbuckle as Heisenberg, Emmy-winner William Cain as Bohr and Broadway veteran Tanny McDonald as Margrethe. "Copenhagen" features original direction by Michael Blakemore, who received the Tony Award for Best Direction for this play on Broadway. The production is being supervised by R. Wade Jackson and the original direction is being recreated by Jennifer Uphoff Gray. The production is produced by The Laguna Playhouse by special arrangement with Columbia Artists Theatricals Inc.
