April 5, 2002 Battle of the Bands to be waged at Purdue University WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Bands based at Purdue University will square off in the fifth annual Battle of the Bands contest Friday, April 19. The event, which begins at 7 p.m. on Purdue's Memorial Mall, is a highlight of a week's worth of activities leading up to the Grand Prix go-kart race on Saturday, April 20. The bands, composed of at least one Purdue student, include Sleep On It, No Reason Given, The Pawnstars, The Ghetto Blasters and Free Raine. They will play music ranging from pop and punk to "ska," a form of Reggae. The bands were selected from 15 demos submitted to the Purdue Student Union Board. Each band will perform for 30 minutes. A panel of judges will decide the top three finishers. The first-place band will earn $150. The second and third place finishers will earn $100 and $50, respectively. Kim Stiller, PSUB Concert Committee project leader, says the Battle of the Bands offers a unique opportunity to hear a variety of music. "It is a fun night to see the musical talent offered by students, and it should be a great time for anyone," Stiller says. The concert is free and open to the public.
