African-American students honored at Purdue University

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – African-American students at Purdue University will be honored for their achievements at the 27th annual academic and service awards program at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 20, in Stewart Center's Fowler Hall.

The program, sponsored by black faculty and staff along with the Purdue Black Alumni Organization, will honor nearly 200 students for academic achievements, service and leadership.

Johnny Brown, event organizer, says it is important that every minority student is recognized.

"To express our appreciation for their hard work and success, we present certificates and gifts to all students," Brown says. "Small monetary awards also are given to students with the highest overall GPA in each classification."

The seventh annual Clara E Bell Academic Achievement Award also will be presented to LaTasha Q. Sandidge, a senior in nursing from Gary, Ind., who achieved the highest GPA in her class. The award is named after a professor emerita and former director of continuing education in nursing. Bell was an active member of the Purdue University Black Caucus of Faculty and Staff.
