April 1, 2001 Police: Students' oil paintings returned, damagedWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Two Purdue University students have recovered their class-project oil paintings, believed to have been stolen March 22 to March 25 from the Creative Arts Building One. "We're very grateful they were found and not destroyed," said student artist Candice Cooper-McCraner, a liberal arts senior who had spent more than 150 hours on her piece and now will need to invest another six hours in repairs. "We're thankful to everyone who helped us recover our work. It's a good day!" The art works are valued at $7,800. They were removed from their wooden frames. Purdue police Capt. Ron Fosnaugh said a Purdue staff member discovered both missing paintings rolled up along with dismantled frames outside against the door frame between Creative Arts Buildings One and Two. "There was a lot of publicity about this theft," Fosnaugh said. "We suspect the unusual nature of the thefts, the news coverage and the flyers posted around campus substantially helped influence the return of the paintings." Fosnaugh said a student earlier reported having seen a college-aged, black male leave the Creative Arts Building with a framed painting that appeared to be one of the missing pieces. That five-by-five foot oil painting depicted a fish, a butterfly and a flower hanging from string. The other missing painting, also a five-by-five foot painting on canvas, depicted a chrome toaster with a reflection of a wrapped loaf of bread.
