Purdue Theatre presents 'Our Town'WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue Theatre concludes its 2001-02 Mainstage season with the Pulitzer Prize-winning play "Our Town" by Thornton Wilder on April 11-21.The play will be performed in the Experimental Theatre, Stewart Center. Associate Professor Richard Sullivan Lee directs the production. "Our Town" offers a nostalgic tale of life in early 20th century New England. It serves as a reminder that the most important things in life–love and family, birth and death–transcend time and place. Lee says the drama's message is timeless. "Like so many people, I had read "Our Town" many years ago," Lee says. "When I revisited the script last year after receiving this directing assignment, I was struck by the simple truth of it. The play for me is about making the people in our lives, above all else, important. It should not be the size of our houses or cars that define us, but our relationships and how we behave in them that truly defines us." The Purdue Theatre production also offers a slice of "our town" Greater Lafayette, featuring four local residents and theatre division chair Russ Jones in the cast. Performing with Jones and a cast of Purdue students are West Lafayette resident Isobel Miller and Jonah Ben-Amotz, a student at Klondike Middle School, Margaret Duvall, a student at Happy Hollow Elementary, and Elena Marie Sparger, a student at Cumberland Elementary. "It was important to me to add members of our community to the cast," Lee says. "They add a wonderful texture to the show, as well as reinforcing the theme that "Our Town" is our town–it's any town, really. At the heart of Wilder's script is the notion that his story is not one of a particular place, but of human beings, the eternal constant in any time or place." Performances are at 8 p.m. April 11-13 and 16-20. Matinees will be presented at 2 p.m. on April 14, 20 and 21. Tickets for "Our Town." are $11 and $13 for the general public, $7 and $9 for students and senior citizens. Additional box office processing fees apply.
