Purdue students celebrate Grand Prix week substance free

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue students looking for fun things to do during Grand Prix week have 32 alcohol-free events from which to choose.

"Grand Alternative 2002" is sponsored by the Dean of Students office, the Grand Prix Foundation and 31 student organizations. The events will take place during the week of April 13-21, highlighted by the Grand Prix kart race on April 20.

The kick-off event is the Grand Prix Convocation at 6:30 p.m. Monday (4/1) in the Elliott Hall of Music. Sponsored by the Office of the Dean of Students, Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic Association and the Purdue Cooperative Council, the event features keynote speaker Wendi Fox. Fox uses her unique sense of humor to put a new spin on campus alcohol issues. Local judicial and law enforcement officials also will be on hand to answer questions. The event is free and open to the public.

Other events include concerts, dances, athletic events, guest speakers, tournaments, inflatable games, free food and Grand Prix Race activities.

Tim Rumple, Grand Alternative coordinator, says students enjoy "letting off some steam" before the end of the semester.

"It's a time to have fun and enjoy the last week of regular classes," Rumple says. "Grand Alternative helps to provide a safe way for students to relax and have fun before concentrating on final exams."
