March 28, 2002 Purdue police seek suspect in student art theftsWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University police are investigating the theft of two oil paintings valued at $7,800 from Creative Arts Building One that took place sometime between Thursday (3/22) and Monday (3/25).
Purdue police Capt. Ron Fosnaugh said two students told investigators they had placed their artwork in a paintings rack in Room 113 of the arts building. When they returned to the room at approximately 5:30 p.m. Monday (3/25), the paintings were gone. The room is intentionally left open to allow students to paint as their schedules permit. Another student who was painting in the room on Thursday evening (3/22), told police he witnessed a college-aged, black male enter the room and leave with a large painting matching the description of one of the missing pieces. That five-by-five foot oil painting depicted a fish, a butterfly and a flower hanging from string. The unsigned painting on canvas was mounted to a wooden frame. The other missing painting – also a five-by-five foot painting on canvas mounted to a wooden frame – depicts a chrome toaster with a reflection of a wrapped loaf of bread.
Fosnaugh said investigators are continuing to work with the witness and victims to identify the suspect and recover the paintings.
