Multimedia show at Purdue University showcases human oddities

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – "ODDITORIUM: A Sideshow in Movements," will feature poetry, paintings, vocal performances and live music about human oddities from the turn of the 20th century to the millennium.

The multimedia show, produced by the Chicago based interdisciplinary artist collective Ink & Images Productions, will be at 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, in the Black Cultural Center at Purdue University.

Krista Franklin, Ink & Image Productions resident artist, says she has been pleased to see "ODDITORIUM" develop into a production that has exceeded what she first envisioned.

"Since I was a small girl, I have been intrigued by 'the grotesque,' human beings whose bodies took on unique and interesting shapes," Franklin says. "There was always something painful about their lives that spoke deeply to me. It is my hope that historical and personal stories explored in this show will ignite something profoundly human in each of us, encourage each of us to constantly reaffirm our humanity, as well as that of others."

In addition to Franklin, artists include co-founders, producers and poets nwenna kai and folade mondisa speaks, as well as National Poetry Slam winner Christina Springer, vocalist Jacqueline Wilson, and visual artists Frank D. Robinson and Lauren Kelley. The bands Poi Dog Pondering and 8FATFAT8 along with cellist Alison Chesley, percussionist Frank Orrall and Djembe drummer Amon also will be featured.
