March 15, 2002 Purdue President Jischke responds to state legislative impasseWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University President Martin C. Jischke today (Friday, 3/15) issued the following statement in reaction to the Indiana General Assembly’s session ending without a resolution to the state's budgetary and tax issues:
"It is disappointing that we have reached the end of the legislative session without a resolution to the state's budget and tax structure problems. This was not because of lack of effort. I believe our state's leaders made a sincere attempt to resolve their differences, but they ran out of time. "We came further than many people believed possible, and it would be a mistake to allow this progress to be lost. It's very important that we resume working on this challenge immediately. A resolution of the tax structure and revenue problems, adequate support for education and an improved climate for business remain matters of utmost urgency for Indiana. "For Purdue, the budget reductions we face in the absence of an improved state financial package are real; they are deep; and they are not in the best interests of the state. If these cuts occur, the ability of the university to support the state's development educationally and economically will be impaired seriously at the worst possible time.
