'Nice Girls Don't Sweat' comes to Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue University women's basketball team and the Purdue Women's Resource Office have suited up to sponsor a presentation of "Nice Girls Don't Sweat" at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, in Stewart Center's Loeb Playhouse.

"Nice Girls Don't Sweat" is a play which focuses on the history of women and exercise. It features actress Jane Curry as Sammy Kay Knight, a former player on the All-American Red Heads professional basketball team. Knight takes a humorous look at the history of women and sport. As she chats with a reporter, Knight examines the issues of physical capacities, propriety and femininity. She also shows historical and contemporary pictures of female athletes.

Karen Hall, director of the Women's Resource Center, says the performance should be entertaining and enlightening.

"The audience is sure to find itself laughing at this show," Hall says. "Did you know that bicycle riding was feared to ruin the 'organs of matrimonial necessity' in women?' Jane Curry, a former Hoosier, presents this kind of information with history and humor. The All-American Red Heads were a real team. The players had to dye their hair if they weren't natural redheads."

The performance is free and open to the public.
