March 6, 2002 Purdue electrical engineering, industry partners meet March 7-8WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University electrical engineering faculty, students and alumni will meet with industry representatives Thursday and Friday, (3/7-8) to discuss the future of electrical engineering, wireless communication and nanotechnology. "Today's Research for Tomorrow's Applications" is the theme of this year's Electrical and Computer Engineering Industrial Affiliates Program in Stewart Center. The conference promotes interaction between the school and industry partners, said Amy Noah, corporate relations manager for School of Electrical and Computer Engineering. The program seeks to speed the transfer of new technologies from the university to industry by assigning an electrical and computer engineering faculty liaison to each affiliate member company, providing research reports to members and holding annual workshops. Guest speakers from member companies will share their knowledge with undergraduate students throughout the program. Membership fees fund institute activities and provide money to purchase equipment and support projects, curriculum and associated programs. The program also will feature the announcement of winners of the Eaton Awards in Design Excellence, established to recognize and encourage excellence in design by students and alumni of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering and to honor the faculty members who inspire them. The awards will be given at a luncheon on Friday. The event also features a student poster review. The event begins Thursday, (3/7) at 7 p.m. with a reception in Stewart Center, Room 218 C, for affiliate members, students and professors. Friday's featured presentation times, topics and their locations are as follows. All sessions will be in Stewart Center, Room 218 A and B, unless otherwise noted. • 8 a.m. – W. Kent Fuchs, head of the school, will provide an overview of the electrical and computer engineering program. • 8:10 a.m. – Linda Katehi, John A. Edwardson dean of engineering, will present an overview of the Schools of Engineering. • 8:30 a.m. – Rudolf Eigenmann, associate professor of computer and electrical engineering, will provide an overview of computer engineering. Other speakers in this session include T. N. Vijaykumar, assistant professor of computer and electrical engineering; Y. Charlie Hu, assistant professor of computer and electrical engineering; and Grant Haab, software engineer for Intel Corp. • 10:15 a.m. – Michael D. Zoltowski, professor of electrical and computer engineering, will chair a discussion in wireless communication. Other speakers on topics in this area include Timothy A. Thomas, principal engineer for Motorola Inc., and James V. Krogmeier, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering. • Noon – Rajiv Laroia, founder and chief technical officer of Flarion Technologies, will deliver the keynote address on wireless data advancements during a luncheon in the Purdue Memorial Union Ballroom. • 2 p.m. – David B. Janes, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, will chair discussions about nanotechnology at Purdue, including a review of work to be done at the Birck Nanotechnology Center. Other speakers in this area include Vladimir M. Shalaev, professor of electrical and computer engineering, and James R. Eaton, design engineer with Hewlett-Packard. The Eaton Award was established in 2001 with an endowment from Eaton and his wife, Shirley, of Palo Alto, Calif. • 3:30 p.m. – Student posters will be reviewed. Ravi R. Mazumdar, professor of electrical and computer engineering, and Rashid Bashir, assistant professor of engineering, served as program technical chairman and vice chairman, respectively.
