February 22, 2002 Comic performer brings science to life at PurdueWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Performer Garry Krinsky will present his show "Toying with Science!" at 7 p.m. Friday, March 8, in Loeb Playhouse. Admission is $10 for general public, $7 for Purdue students and children K-12. Tickets can be purchased at Purdue box offices or charged by phone at (765) 494-3933 or (800) 914-SHOW. "Toying with Science!" is presented by Purdue Convocations. Krinsky puts on his top hat, striped shirt and bow tie and mixes mime, juggling and jokes with the basic principles of science in his presentation of "Toying with Science!" It is a fast-paced performance that explores, among other things, the scientific principles of gravity, air-resistance, fulcrums, leverage, simple machines and the human property of imagination. As he blows his kazoo, dances, sings "Fulcrum Man" and does acrobatics, audiences find that learning doesn't have to be dull. The show was commissioned and developed in cooperation with the Museum of Science in Boston. Krinsky takes his audience inside the mind of a scientist as he demonstrates the process of working on a problem Krinsky was first attracted to science when he found that it could help him accomplish things, such as learning mime or juggling, scuba or sky diving, or to simply understand car mechanics so he could maintain a working car. "I learned how to juggle after doing mime about one year, and my mime practice helped me learn it very quickly," Krinsky says. "In my show I demonstrate how I learned step-by-step, starting with scarves, then moving to balls, and eventually clubs and torches." Krinsky's shows offer a lot of audience interaction. He challenges the audience with questions of science and invites volunteers to come onstage for two different routines. Krinsky was an original member of the Boston Buffoons, co-founder of the Patchwork Players and a member of The Wright Bros., a New England vaudeville troupe. Since 1978 Krinsky has brought his show to schools, theatres and festivals and also has been seen on NBC's "Today." This performance is an excellent way to help introduce science to young people, he says. "Science is everywhere around you, and you can understand how things work and bring life into your toys," Krinsky tells children.
