February 22, 2002 Seminar to focus on southwestern Indiana crop management WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Southwest Indiana Crop Management Seminar will take place on March 6, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. EST, at the Holiday Inn Conference Center in Jasper, Ind. The one-day seminar is free of charge and will equip producers with the knowledge to increase profits while addressing environmental concerns. Keith Johnson, forage specialist from the Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service, expects the seminar's forage topics to be popular with producers. "Farmers have acknowledged a need for better management of forages, whether it's selecting and managing hay species appropriate for local conditions, or in storing, feeding and selling the final product," Johnson said. "Local specialists, experienced with southern Indiana conditions, will be available to help producers manage their forage operations." Specific topics to be covered are: no-till and forage management, soybean and corn production, soybean innoculants and supplemental plantings, corn stress, weed and insect control, fall-applied herbicides, planter settings and attachments, vole control, fertility and manure application in high residue and forage systems, rotational stocking, hay baleage, reducing hay rain damage, forage species update, recordkeeping, the 2002 agriculture outlook and the U.S. farm bill update. Private Applicator training, Continuing Credit Hours and Certified Crop Advisor Continuing Education Units are available for those attending the event. A $10 fee for those requesting PARP credit is required. The event is sponsored by Purdue Extension Service; Indiana Department of Natural Resources division of soil conservation; Indiana Soybean Board; local Soil and Water conservation districts, including Dubois, Daviess, Knox, Martin, Orange, Perry, Pike, Posey, Spencer, Warrick, Washington and Vanderburgh counties; and an Environmental Protection Agency grant.
