Student financial aid deadline approaching fast

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – College students, high school seniors and their parents need to be thinking about the 2002-03 school year, or at least how they are going to pay for college.

Hoosiers must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form by March 1 in order to be eligible for college, state and university need-based financial aid for the 2002-03 school year.

Joyce Hall, director of financial aid at Purdue University, says students will have the best chance at receiving aid if they submit their forms on time.

"If forms are turned in late, students will still be considered for the federal Pell Grant program and loan programs," Hall says. "But to have a chance at more gift assistance, the March 1 deadline must be met. Financial aid is really a first-come, first-served situation."

High school students can pick up forms from their high school guidance office. Students also are encouraged to file the FAFSA electronically.

Current college students who have previously been awarded aid should have received renewal FAFSA information from the federal government processing center. College students who have not received prior financial aid can request the FAFSA from their school's financial aid office or file electronically.
