February 15, 2002 Purdue literary contest seeks submissions WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Entries are now being accepted for the 71st Annual Literary Awards Contest sponsored by the Department of English and the School of Liberal Arts on Purdue University's West Lafayette campus. Student writers from all Purdue campuses are eligible to enter the competition, which includes a variety of categories ranging from poetry, short-story and novel-in-progress to critical essay, journalism and screenplay. A complete list of categories and contest rules is available at the Literary Awards Contest Web page. Participation is open to all undergraduate and graduate students. More than 70 cash prizes will be awarded, including a $500 Best of Contest Award. The submission deadline is 5 p.m. March 6, and all prizes will be presented at the Literary Awards Banquet beginning at 5:30 p.m. on April 22 in the Purdue Memorial Union North Ballroom. This year's keynote speaker is Nobel Prize-winning poet Seamus Heaney who will address the contest winners on the creative process. After the banquet, Heaney will give a reading of his poetry, followed by a question-and-answer session, beginning at 8 p.m. in the Loeb Playhouse. The reading is free and open to the public. Tickets for the banquet are on sale now in the Department of English Office, 324 Heavilon Hall, on the West Lafayette campus. The cost is $20 for adults, $15 for students.
