February 15, 2002 Ten women to compete for title of Miss Purdue WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Ten Purdue students will participate in the Miss Purdue Scholarship Pageant on Sunday, March 3. The pageant, which is affiliated with the Miss America Organization, will be at 2 p.m. at Fowler Hall in the Stewart Center. Rick Mummey, a DJ at WGLM-FM in Lafayette, will serve as the emcee. Contestants competing for the title of Miss Purdue 2002 include: Marcy Jean Astrup, a senior from Peru, Ind., majoring in organizational leadership and supervision. Cari Brady, a junior from Linden, Ind., majoring in management. Jennifer Rachelle Dalton, a junior from Tecumseh, Mich., majoring in biology. Alexis Derrossett, a freshman from Kansas City, Mo., majoring in political science. Laura N. Fox, a junior from West Chester, Ohio, majoring in biology. Rachel Haynes, a junior from Greenwood, Ind., majoring in pre-pharmacy. Jilliane Marie McCoy, a junior from Granville, Ohio, majoring in French education. Shubi Razdan, a graduate student from Indianapolis, majoring in medicine. Lisa Michelle Umlauf, a sophomore from Lowell, Ind., majoring in elementary education. Whitney Weeks, a senior from Chesterfield, Mo., majoring in sales management. The contestants will be judged on four areas of competition, including talent (40 percent of score), private interview (30 percent of score), swimsuit, (15 percent of score) and evening gown (15 percent of score). Each constant also will advocate a platform based on a social issue. Lee Ann Happ, staff director for the Miss Purdue Scholarship Pageant, says the event is much more than a beauty contest. "The pageant offers all contestants an opportunity to earn scholarship money to pay for higher education," Happ says. "Plus, the young women will make a difference in our community by bringing awareness of a social issue. The pageant also will help them improve their leadership skills, public speaking and confidence levels." The newly crowned Miss Purdue will receive a scholarship and compete at the Miss Indiana Pageant to be in Terre Haute, Ind., in June.
