Saturday Night Fish Fry brings jazz to Long Center

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Saturday Night Fish Fry will begin at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, in the Long Center for the Performing Arts, 111 N. Sixth St., Lafayette.

Tickets are $22 for general public, $15 for Purdue students and children K-12. Tickets can be purchased at Purdue box offices or charged by phone at (765) 494-3933 or (800) 914-SHOW. The Saturday Night Fish Fry is presented by Purdue Convocations.

The program will feature an organ trio teamed with a tenor saxophone, a sound popular in the clubs and roadhouses in the so-called Southern "chitlin' circuit" during the 40s and 50s.

Convocations associate director Don Seybold, who programs the jazz series for the department, says, "This music is really the sound of soul. It's down, it's gritty, it's dirty – it's the blues, but with the bite and taste of jazz."

The organ trio will feature three well-known jazz musicians. Hank Marr will play the Hammond B-3 organ, backed up by drummer Grady Tate and guitarist Russell Malone. Malone is known for his guitar work with popular jazz singer/pianist Diana Krall.

Jazz great Houston Person will join the trio on his tenor saxophone. For many years Person partnered with the legendary song stylist, Etta Jones.

There will be free "Jazz Informance" presented by Seybold at the adjacent St. John Pavilion one hour before the show. Seybold will discuss the music and its place in jazz history.
