Indiana students put skills to the test in Science Olympiad

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – More than 200 high school and middle school students from central Indiana will visit Purdue University for the 11th annual Science Olympiad on Saturday, Feb. 23.

The future scientists, representing 23 schools, will test their skills in events ranging from anatomy to weather. The competition will be from 8:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. An awards presentation will be in the Wetherill Laboratory of Chemistry, Room 200, following the events.

Purdue's program is one of nine regional competitions being held in Indiana. The top three middle school and high school students in each event will advance to the statewide competition March 23 at Indiana University in Bloomington.

Participants at Purdue will come from schools in Bloomington, Brownsburg, Carlisle, Carmel, Clay City, Indianapolis, Kokomo, Lafayette, Mishawaka, Muncie, Sullivan, Terre Haute, Union City and Westfield.

Scheduled competitions include:

• Dynamic Planet: Teams work at stations that display a variety of earth science materials and related earth science questions.

• Reach for the Stars: Teams identify constellations and solve astronomy problems.

• Science of Fitness: Students test their knowledge of fitness concepts.

• Rocks and Minerals: Various specimens are identified, described and classified.

Other event titles include Wright Stuff, Sounds of Music, Disease Detective, Cell Biology and Egg Drop.
