School offers hands-on experience for lambing season

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue University Extension will host its annual lambing school on March 9 for sheep producers to learn about the important management period of lambing season in a sheep operation.

During the daylong event topics such as lambing barn obstetrics, newborn lamb care, lambing season nutrition, flock health considerations, reproduction and other management strategies will be discussed. Mike Neary, Extension sheep specialist, says ewes are scheduled to lamb during the school, which allows producers the opportunity to observe and participate firsthand in the lambing process.

The school takes place at the Purdue University Animal Sciences Research and Education Center sheep unit from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The cost is $35 per person and includes educational materials, lunch and refreshments. The entry deadline is March 1 and the school is limited to 40 participants.

For additional information or a registration flier, contact Neary at (765) 494-4849, mneary@purdue.edu. Those interested also can contact their local Extension office or call 1-888-EXT-INFO.
