February 8, 2002 Purdue Memorial Union painting foundWEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. An oil painting reported missing from the Purdue University Memorial Union Wednesday (2/6) had been removed for repairs by a university employee and not stolen, as was originally believed. The three-by-six foot canvas depicting a 1930s-era Purdue football team during a touchdown drive had been taken from the wall outside the service entrance to the Sweet Shop by a university carpenter who had received a work order to secure the frame. Terry Clayton, assistant director for building services and scheduling in the Memorial Union, said today (Friday, 2/8) that when employees alerted him the painting was missing he notified the Purdue University Police Department, not realizing it had been taken down because of the work order. Clayton said the work was completed and the painting has been returned to its original location. Writer: Sharon A.
