Purdue Jazz Band offers Valentine's 'Evening of Romance'

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Seeking to recreate the atmosphere of Big Band dance clubs where couples came to enjoy music, dancing, food and each other's company, the Purdue Jazz Band will present "An Evening of Romance" Saturday, Feb. 9, at Maize Catering, 625 Columbia St., Lafayette.

Detroit vocalist Kathy Kosins will accompany the band. Described by a Chicago Tribune reviewer as possessing "one of the most alluring voices in jazz," Kosins is a three-time ASCAP award-winning songwriter with more than 200 compositions to her name.

"Mood Swings," Kosins' debut CD on the Chiaroscuro label, has just been released. It showcases the singer's romantic nature and captures the many moods, nuances and styles of swing, soul, blues and bop. Jazz band director M.T. "Mo" Trout says the band will give Kosins ample opportunity to romance the audience with her voice through such tunes as "Caught a Touch of Your Love" and "I Just Fond Out About Love."

Lafayette native and Purdue sophomore Sara Suppinger also will share her talents in "Save Your Love for Me." The band will be featured in such numbers as "April in Paris," "Don't Get Sassy" and "I Can't Stop Loving You."

For the cabaret-style event, guests will be seated at candlelit tables. Hors d'oeuvres and desserts by the chefs of two of Lafayette's gourmet restaurants, Maize and Buon Appetito, are included in the $15 per person admission. A cash bar will be available.

The event starts at 8 p.m. and runs to approximately 10:30 p.m. Seating is limited. Advance tickets are being sold through the Purdue box office, (765) 494-4933 or (800) 914-SHOW, with any remaining seats being sold at the door.
