Through march 1: applications for inspiring families and building communities award

The Purdue University School of Consumer and Family Sciences announces the first annual Inspiring Families and Building Communities Award. The award is designed to honor an individual, program or collaboration that has improved the well-being of Indiana families. Youth programs serving both caregivers and children also will be considered.

A monetary award of $1,500 will be given to the organization of the winning nominee’s choice. An additional $1,500 will be awarded to the endorsing community foundation. January 28-february 7: purdue regional beef workshops

Purdue Regional Beef Workshops are being offered in an effort between the Purdue University Extension beef team and the Indiana Beef Cattleman’s Association. Regional meetings around the state will cover topics such as animal nutrition, marketing, herd health and carcass ultrasound. The workshops are all from 6-8:30 p.m. and include dinner and a regional business meeting of the Indiana Beef Cattleman’s Association.

January 28-30: 2002 indiana horticulture congress and trade show

The Indiana Horticulture Congress is an annual event sponsored by several Indiana horticultural associations, the Department of Horticulture and the Purdue University Cooperative Extension Office. The programs will help individuals improve their business performance by providing updates on production practices, pesticides, food safety, produce quality, specialty crops, market opportunities and other new concepts.

Programs for organic growers have been expanded. There are several concurrent sessions, which have been scheduled so that subjects geared to particular interest groups run consecutively. Event information, schedules of the educational programs, and forms that you will need to register and make hotel reservations are available on the Web. The event will be at the Adam’s Mark Hotel in Indianapolis. The cost is $35 for IHC members and $45 for non-members.

February 2: annual ag alumni fish fry – bob dole to be keynote speaker

This year the Purdue University Ag Alumni Fish Fry will feature a new location, a Saturday schedule and a marquee guest speaker. The Fish Fry will be at 11:30 a.m. in the Cumberland Place Exhibition Center, West Lafayette, Ind. Former presidential candidate Bob Dole will be the keynote speaker. Tickets for the event have been sold out. News media will be able to cover the event by contacting Beth Forbes, ag news coordinator, (765) 494-2722.

Prior to the Fish Fry, the annual Ag Forecast will be held in the University Inn Conference Center, adjacent to Cumberland Place. A discussion on environmental issues and the new farm bill legislation will feature panelists Jim Moseley, deputy secretary of agriculture, and a representative of the Environmental Protection Agency. Orion Samuelson, host of U.S. Farm Report, will moderate the discussion, which will start at 9:15 a.m. Admission to the Ag Forecast is free. February 22: isaf winter meeting

The Indiana Society of American Foresters will have their winter meeting in West Lafayette, Ind., at the Whistler Agricultural Research Building at Purdue University. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m., and the first session begins at 9 a.m. The registration fee is $10 and checks can be made payable to the Indiana Society of American Foresters.
