January 11, 2002 Area jazz ensembles compete at Purdue Jazz Festival WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – During the Purdue Jazz Festival on Jan. 18-20 there will be more jazz per square foot on the campus than in the jazz capital of New Orleans. More than 100 high school and middle school jazz bands and vocal ensembles will participate in competitions. They also will rub shoulders with performers of national renown at workshops, clinics and concerts. Latin jazz flavors the festival’s opening night on Friday, Jan. 18 at an 8 p.m. concert by the Poncho Sanchez Latin Octet in the Loeb Playhouse of the Purdue Stewart Center. On Saturday, Jan. 19, school jazz ensembles from Indiana, Michigan and Illinois tune up early as competition stretches throughout the day in the Purdue Stewart Center, Purdue Memorial Union and University Church. The festival finale concert at 8:30 p.m. on Jan. 19 in the Loeb Playhouse features jazz vocalist Vanessa Rubin and pianist James Williams with the Purdue Jazz Band and PMO Express. The festival wraps up Sunday, Jan. 20, with a jazz church service and a jazz brunch featuring live music. All events are open to the public.
