January 7, 2002 JOURNALISTS: Here are story ideas and a list of selected Purdue events during the next two weeks. Major Gift for Alumni Center On Saturday (1/12) Purdue University will announce a major gift that will make possible the construction of a new alumni center on the corner of Grant and Wood streets in West Lafayette this year. The donors will be available for media interviews from 11:30 a.m. to noon at the Elliott Hall of Music stage on the West Lafayette campus. You also are invited to attend a luncheon featuring presentations by the donors, alumni association leaders and university administrators from noon to 1:30 p.m. At halftime during the Purdue-Minnesota men's basketball game in Mackey Arena, the donors will address the fans, which provides another photo, video and a limited interview opportunity. The game begins at 2:30 p.m. We will provide a news release at both Elliott Hall and Mackey Arena. An artist's rendering of the new center, as well as the news release, will be available after the game at our Web site. More information about the alumni center is available online. Oliver North to speak at Purdue Oliver North will provide the keynote address Thursday, Jan. 17, at the Purdue College Republicans fifth annual Governor Harry G. Leslie Day Dinner. Former white freedom rider to speak at Purdue David Fankhauser, a professor of biology and chemistry at Cleremont College in Cincinnati, Ohio, and a white freedom rider of the 1960s civil rights movement, will speak at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21, in the Loeb Playhouse. The speech is entitled "Service Learning as a Life Changing Experience: A White Freedom Rider Speaks." Fankhauser will reflect on what it was like to be a 19-year-old white chemistry student arrested for sitting in a "colored only" waiting room in the South. Fankhauser spent 40 days in a maximum security prison. The speech is a highlight of the Affirming the Dream VII: Acts of Kindness /Acts of Justice program sponsored by the Diversity Resource Office.
