Conference celebrates the role of women in agriculture

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The first-ever Midwest Women in Agriculture conference, sponsored by the Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service, will be March 21 at Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth, Ind. The event focuses on the needs of women in agriculture, both on and off the farm, and in the agribusiness industry.

"Women are increasingly playing a major role in agriculture," said Kelly Easterday, Purdue Extension educator in Kosciusko County. "It is important to recognize the contributions women make to the success of agriculture. We hope that women leave this conference with a renewed sense of their importance, a new optimism about their farm operation and confidence to try new ideas or enterprises."

The keynote speaker for the event is Jolene Brown, a certified speaking professional and farm spouse and mother. She will talk on the "Top Ten Stupid Things Families Do to Break Up Their Farm Operation." She also will lead a session titled, "Who's Hiding the Humor?"

Other topics to be covered during conference sessions include:

  • Small-scale agricultural enterprise development
  • Marketing your farm product
  • The future of agriculture in the 21st century
  • Farm and family living expenses
  • Land use and neighbor relations
  • Profit robbers in your farm operation
  • Making small farms profitable
  • Investing outside of agriculture
  • Working with your farm lender
  • Home and farm safety

Easterday said the main conference objectives are defining the woman's role in making the family farm profitable, strengthening the woman's role as she deals with the emotional well-being of the farm family and building a support network among women in agriculture.

The conference runs from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. EST. Registration for the conference is $40 before March 1 and $50 after March 1.
