Purdue Bug Bowl

Cockroach racing and cricket spitting are among the many popular insect activities that draw thousands of visitors to Purdue University's annual Bug Bowl each April.

According to Tom Turpin, professor of entomology and Bug Bowl co-founder, the cricket-spitting contest made its debut in 1997 and is sanctioned by the Guinness Book of Records. Visitors also are able to taste foods cooked with insects, visit a honey bee exhibit and taste some honey, stop by an insect petting zoo, and watch the famous cockroach races.

Bug Bowl, which has gained national exposure for its combination of entomology, education and entertainment, celebrates its 17th birthday in 2007. "While they're here, people can pick up good information on the role of insects in nature and entomology. When we do the cockroach races, we always talk about the roaches' role in nature, roaches as pests, and roaches and allergies," Turpin says.

The 2006 Bug Bowl was held on April 8 and 9. The event was free and open to the public and was held on the Purdue campus. Bug Bowl takes place in Smith and Pfendler Halls, the lawn in front of AGAD, and on the Memorial Mall.

Bug Bowl is part of Spring Fest, which offers different events, activities and demonstrations sponsored by the Colleges of Agriculture, Science, Consumer and Family Sciences, Education, Liberal Arts, Engineering, Technology, also Veterinary Medicine, and Krannert School of Management as well as several other departments around campus.

Perennial Spring Fest attractions include the horticulture show, the veterinary medicine open house and the Boiler Barnyard.
