There are few technologies more fundamental to modern life than the ability to control light with precision. Yet one capability has remained frustratingly out of reach: controlling light with light itself at the most fundamental level using single photons to switch or modulate powerful optical beams. Now researchers at Purdue have achieved this long-sought milestone, demonstrating what they call a “photonic transistor” that operates at single-photon intensities.
Melanie Kuhn’s “Handbook on the Science of Literacy in Grades 3-8” explores how to support upper elementary and middle grades learners in improving morphological knowledge and vocabulary, understanding text complexity, and building comprehension. Kuhn, the Jean Adamson Stanley Faculty Chair in Literacy in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, co-edited the book with colleague Susan B. Neuman.
Purdue honored 231 researchers during the Nov. 19 Seed for Success Acorn Awards ceremony, which recognizes Purdue principal investigators and co-investigators who obtain external research funding of $1 million or more for a single proposal. This year’s honorees contributed to 100 research projects and included 74 first-time award recipients.
Purdue men’s basketball coach Matt Painter has been presented with the Purdue Alumni Association’s Distinguished Alumni Award for Meritorious Service, the highest honor given by the association. The award recognizes individuals for their significant achievements and contributions to their professions, communities and the university.
On Nov. 17 at the fourth annual Trusted Tech Summit in Washington, D.C., the Krach Institute for Tech Diplomacy at Purdue launched the Global Trusted Tech Network, the world’s fastest-growing alliance of governments, companies, individuals and institutions united around the conviction that technology must advance freedom. Also at the summit, the Krach Institute presented its annual Trusted Tech Leadership Awards to leaders and institutions exemplifying integrity, courage and innovation in advancing trusted technology across the AI stack.
The NCAA volleyball selection committee has chosen Purdue to host the first and second rounds of the NCAA volleyball tournament at Holloway Gymnasium on Thursday and Friday (Dec. 4-5). The Boilermakers, an overall top-16 team with hosting rights, were tabbed as a No. 3 seed and will face Wright State in the first round on Thursday at approximately 7 p.m. ET or 30 minutes following the conclusion of the 4:30 p.m. ET match, which features Arkansas State and No. 6 seed Baylor.
Purdue has closed the bid solicitation for a systemwide syllabus management tool. The project team is now entering the evaluation stage and invites all Purdue instructors to participate in reviewing recordings and providing feedback on the proposed syllabus management solutions.
