History took flight on Friday (Aug. 8) with a special ceremony marking the opening of the new Amelia Earhart Terminal at the Purdue University Airport and the enhancement of commercial air services. The terminal was named for Amelia Earhart to honor her historic connection to Purdue. Earhart was an advisor and counselor in careers for women at Purdue from 1935-37. She focused on vocational aptitudes, goals and careers for women. She also flew out of Purdue University Airport in the 1930s when it became the nation’s first university-owned airport.
Purdue’s summer commencement took place Saturday (Aug. 9) across two ceremonies and recognized the achievements of 1,725 graduates, including 612 undergraduates, 1,104 graduate students and nine students from Purdue Polytechnic Institute’s statewide programs.

Purdue reports strong financial, record research results for FY 2025
Purdue closed fiscal year 2025 on solid footing, achieving strong financial results and record-breaking research growth that position the institution for continued momentum. Purdue’s main campus finished with a positive operating margin of 4.7% that contributes to enabling major new construction or renovation of facilities. In sharp contrast to peer institutions across the Big Ten and nationally, Purdue’s
research expenditures surged 9% to $656 million for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2025.
College of Veterinary Medicine researchers are taking an innovative approach to studying Alzheimer’s disease. Ranjie Xu, an assistant professor in the Department of Basic Medical Sciences and a member of the Purdue Institute for Integrative Neuroscience, has developed a sophisticated 3D human mini-brain model to reveal new insights into how the disease progresses and to validate promising new treatments.
Purdue juniors Deniz Eksioglu and Christina Sowinski have been offered 2025 Barry Goldwater Scholarships. This award is the nation’s premier scholarship for undergraduates studying the natural sciences, engineering and mathematics.
On July 17-18 and July 24-25, the Purdue for Life Foundation hosted 1,000 grandparents and grandchildren in West Lafayette for Grandparents University. The goal of this annual event is to strengthen connections among grandparents, their grandchildren and Purdue.
The Purdue Board of Trustees on Friday (Aug. 8) approved 2026 health plans, which will have a slight employee premium increase — for just the second time in six years. The plans align with the university’s strategic approach to health care and the Healthy Boiler Wellness Program, and they were designed as part of Purdue’s ongoing goal of improving population health.
