Underground on Purdue’s campus is the only nuclear reactor in Indiana. Although used just for research purposes — the total energy the reactor generates powers about the equivalent of 10 microwaves — Purdue University Reactor Number One has specific features that no other reactor in the U.S. has. But those features are coming in the next generation of reactors.
Seen as a resource for scientists using spectroscopic laser diagnostics and those looking to gain a deeper understanding of the physics of radiative transitions, “Fundamentals of Laser Spectroscopy for Atoms and Diatomic Molecules” extensively covers atomic and molecular structure alongside radiative transitions. Written by Robert Lucht, the Ralph and Bettye Bailey Distinguished Professor of Mechanical Engineering and director of Maurice J. Zucrow Laboratories, the book appeals to professionals in mechanical, aerospace and chemical engineering, and in applied physics and chemistry.

Spring Fling — the annual appreciation event for faculty, staff, graduate student staff and retirees — will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday (May 22) at and around Memorial Mall. Registration is not required to participate in lunch, bingo, disc golf, yard games, the wellness experience or the blood drive. The bloodmobile is accepting appointments online, and walk-ins are also welcome.
Each January, the Spring Fling committee holds its first monthly meeting to discuss logistics, review the budget and brainstorm ways to enhance the event. This year’s committee is led by Carrie Hanson, who’s chaired the Spring Fling coordinating committee for the past 20 years.
