Mechanical engineering researcher develops state-of-the-art processes to tailor-make energetic materials
Additive manufacturing — commonly known as 3D printing — has become a staple area of study across engineering disciplines because of its potential to revolutionize the design and production of a variety of materials and structures. Monique McClain, assistant professor in Purdue’s School of Mechanical Engineering, has dedicated her career to more efficiently developing high-quality and high-performing 3D-printed energetic materials, such as explosives, pyrotechnics and propellants, that can be fine-tuned for performance and safety.

Watch: Purdue Robotics’ PurDog, Halo and Auro show their moves at Mackey
Purdue Robotics’ robots — PurDog, Halo and Auro — joined in the Keady Court excitement on Friday (Feb. 28) for the “Lance Dance,” a popular fist-pumping dance among Mackey Arena attendees to the song “Sandstorm.” In addition to their performance on the court, the robots also engaged fans on the concourse, adding to the interactive fan experience. Behind the fun, there’s AI and machine learning research at play. Purdue scientists are teaching these robots to understand the world like humans do — learning to navigate spaces, recognize emotions and interact with people.
