Purdue University on Thursday (Aug. 15) officially opened its new esports facility, the Alienware Purdue Gaming Lounge, amid pomp, pageantry and high-tech gadgetry. Housed within the France A. Physicists at Purdue are throwing the world’s smallest disco party. The disco ball itself is a fluorescent nanodiamond, which they have levitated and spun at incredibly high speeds. The fluorescent diamond emits and scatters multicolor lights in different directions as it rotates. The party continues as they study the effects of fast rotation on the spin qubits within their system and are able to observe the Berry phase. The work is a new milestone for levitated optomechanics.

The Golden Hammer Educator Appreciation football game will take place Aug. 31, which is Purdue’s season opener against Indiana State University.
U.S. volleyball star Annie Drews won a silver medal at the Summer Olympics to go with her gold from the Tokyo Games, providing the highlight among the Purdue athletes competing in Paris. Drews was one of 12 Boilermaker participants — a group that also included Devynne Charlton (sixth place in the 100-meter hurdles), Chukwuebuka Enekwechi (sixth in the shot put) and divers Tyler Downs and Greg Duncan (eighth in 3-meter synchronized diving).
