Tar spot disease
Purdue researchers adopt interdisciplinary approach to assessing emerging tar spot disease in corn
C.D. Cruz, associate professor of botany and plant pathology, and his associates are applying a mix of statistics, data science, epidemiology, microbiology, artificial intelligence, computer vision and continual stakeholder feedback to better understand the dynamics of tar spot in corn. Their work is funded by two grants totaling nearly $1.1 million from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture. Deploying these methods of high-tech data collection and analysis could make a vital mass of corn pathology information more widely and rapidly available.

Purdue President Mung Chiang has announced the fall lineup for the Westwood Lecture Series, which provides an opportunity for university faculty to interact with colleagues on scholarly work from a wide range of fields. The Westwood Lecture Series is a program aimed at enhancing the intellectual vibrancy of the Purdue West Lafayette campus.
