If it’s one thing Nicholas Gallina knows, it’s the value of perseverance. Growing up in Griffith, Indiana, he overcame a developmental disorder that made academics challenging until science “clicked” in high school. After studying microbiology at Indiana State University, Gallina is now working on his doctorate at Purdue and homing in on how probiotics can remediate Crohn’s disease and colitis.
The manufacture and discard of traditional superabsorbent materials — typically made from synthetic polymers, primarily polyacrylate-based compounds — are affecting the planet. Purdue researchers are developing biodegradable materials that retain water in a cleaner, more sustainable way and have much less environmental impact.
For Kendra Erk, associate professor of materials engineering, these three themes have guided her career, from instructing students in the classroom and research lab to pursuing her own goals. Erk is one of the 2024 Charles B. Murphy Award winners.
