Andrea Vacca, the Maha Fluid Power Faculty Chair and professor of mechanical engineering, has been elected a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Vacca studies fluid power, modeling and simulating hydraulic systems, pumps, motors and valves for multiple fluid power applications. The ASME Committee of Past Presidents confers the fellow grade of membership on worthy candidates to recognize their outstanding engineering achievements.
No one on the planet knows more about the operation and management of NASA’s space shuttle than Purdue alumnus Wayne Hale. He served as flight director for nearly a third of all shuttle flights and helped NASA return to flight after the disasters of Challenger and Columbia. Hale eventually rose to manage the entire space shuttle program, overseeing 25,000 people and an annual budget of $5 billion.
