Deep Learning Analysis of Cardiac Imaging in Pediatric Heart Disease DUIRI - Discovery Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Research Internship Summer 2023 Accepted Biomedical Engineering, Mathematics and Statistics This project will apply deep learning analysis to 3D/4D cardiac images provided by pediatric cardiologist collaborators at Riley Children’s Hospital and Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital. These images are taken using advanced cardiac magnetic resonance in children with progressive Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). DMD is a devastating neuromuscular disease with no known cure. Heart disease is the number one cause of death in DMD and more advanced techniques are needed to understand and treat its progression. Working closely with an MD/PhD student in the lab, this project will involve generating automatic segmentation and classification algorithms to be used in characterizing this disease and improving diagnosis and management in collaboration with our clinical partners. Students may also gain experience in cardiac ultrasound analysis and working with mouse models of cardiac disease. Conner Clair Earl Conner Clair Earl The intern will work directly with cardiac images and spend time performing appropriate image processing and data preparation for developing and running deep neural networks. Interns will also spend time performing manual image segmentation to aid in training neural networks. Experience in coding (MATLAB, Python). Strong initiative. Interest in health/medicine a plus. Desire for long-term research experience a plus. 0 40 (estimated)
