Mapping Graduate and Undergraduate Science and Technology Studies Programs in the US and Abroad Clarence E. Dammon Dean Academic Year 2022 Accepted Science and Technology Studies (STS); Geographic Information Systems (GIS) In Fall 2020, Purdue College of Liberal Arts launched a new undergraduate Certificate in Science and Technology Studies (STS) for all majors, a new program that allows students to examine some of the central problems of our time concerning the ethics, efficacy, and impacts of science and technology. A team of Anthropology faculty is now conducting a systematic review and analysis of other STS programs in order to understand the landscape of STS teaching in North America, with its current strengths and gaps. The goal of this study is to assess opportunities for engaged and applied training in this specialization as Purdue, as the College explores expanding the role of STS on Purdue’s campus. This internship will involve assisting in the processing and visualization of spatial data (e.g., managing web maps and dashboards) from our larger study of national and international STS programs, using a web-based geographic information systems (GIS) software. The results of this will be a publicly available online platform for prospective students and STS program managers, and will help inform the future direction of science and technology studies in CLA. Ian C Lindsay Ian C Lindsay Students will gain experience in different research tasks as suits their interests and career goals, but the general direction of the internship will be to assist with analysis and dissemination of our STS program assessment using contemporary geospatial mapping methods. The internship will be an excellent opportunity to gain highly marketable experience using modern web-GIS tools in the context of social science research applications. The student intern will attend regular meetings with the faculty adviser and rest of the project research team.
