Healing Words: The Intersection of Medicine and Literature in the Works of Russian Doctors-Writers Margo Katherine Wilke Undergraduate Research Internship Program Fall 2024 Accepted Russian Literature, Linguistics, Medicine This project explores the heritage of Russian doctors who turned writers and brought their medical experience to literature. We will focus on Anton Chekhov’s work, in particular, his semi-documentary Sakhalin Island, as well as Vikenty Veresaev and Mikhail Bulgakov’s Doctor’s Notebooks. The project aims to showcase the authors’ medical eye for detail and their humanitarian concern, both of which profoundly shaped their literary voices. Olga V Lyanda-Geller The intern is expected to work with classical Russian literature, to critically read literary texts, identify medicine-related phenomena in the texts, and connect the author's medical and literary experiences. 1.
