Metatheatre in Ancient Mediterranean Comedy Margo Katherine Wilke Undergraduate Research Internship Program Fall 2024 Accepted Classical Studies, Theatre The comic genres of Ancient Greece and Rome are marked by moments in which a character’s self-aware or self-referential language draws attention—either explicitly or implicitly—to the fact that they are participating a performance enacted for an audience. Moments such as these are referred to as metatheatre, i.e., theatre that is in some sense about theatre. This project advances research for conference papers, articles, and book projects about this aspect of comedy in Ancient Greece and Rome. Erin K Moodie Reading new research on metatheatre and on specific Greek and Roman comedies, then producing an annotated bibliography.
Creating a database to organize existing research.
Identifying metatheatrical passages of Greek comedy and adding them to an existing database.
Necessary: successful completion of at least 3 CLCS, GREK, or LATN courses. Preferred: knowledge of Ancient Greek or Latin at the intermediate level. 1 3 (estimated)
