David Moore came to Purdue University from Indianapolis in the fall of 2000. A high school Varsity Football Team Captain, he was a stand-out candidate and was selected to receive a four-year Marine Corps ROTC scholarship. David was a leader in all of his endeavors at Purdue, be it in the classroom, weight room, or in training with the Midshipman Battalion. When an old football injury resurfaced that prohibited him from commissioning as a Marine Corps Officer, David decided to pursue a career with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. His spirit and dedication to serve the people of the country he loved never faded and David continued his reputation of excellence while serving with the IMPD. His devotion and skill were recognized when he was awarded Rookie Officer of the Year in 2005, a Medal of Valor for a shooting in the line of duty in 2008, and the Medal of Honor for his actions on the day he was shot.
David’s years at Purdue made a lasting impact on the University and everyone that he met. With a commanding presence and a booming voice that demanded respect, he had an amazing ability to be many different things to many different people. David was a coach when you needed direction, a big brother when you needed a boost, a guardian when you needed someone at your back, but above all, a steadfast and selfless friend in any situation. David’s friends credit him for making their time at Purdue as some of the best memories of their lives. Whether it was lending a hand to help or an ear to listen, he never hesitated to go out of his way to better the lives of everyone he met. David was a larger-than-life figure, both physically and metaphorically; yet, he was equally as gentle and caring. His friendship, spirit, and presence will forever be a part of the Purdue campus and stay in the hearts of his fellow Boilermakers.
In the 29 years of his short life, David truly touched everybody he ever met. Any monetary donations will be greatly appreciated to help carry on the spirit of David’s legacy. Hail Purdue!
