Sustainability Efforts
Parking
Parking Facilities recycles paper, plastic and aluminum. We use environmentally benign de-icing fluid in all of the parking garages. We partner with CityBus to provide free rides for all faculty, staff, students and retirees to help reduce the number of vehicles brought to campus. We are working to replace lighting in the parking garages with energy- and maintenance-saving lighting.
Airport
The Purdue University Airport recycles oils, plastics, paper and aluminum. We also use an environmentally benign runway de-icing fluid. In the past, we recycled a 737 aircraft with 25 tons of aluminum.

Alternative Fuels
Transportation Pumps
- Gasohol — E10
- BioDiesel — B10
Alternative fuels are derived from resources other than petroleum. Most are produced domestically, reducing our dependence on imported oil, and some are derived from renewable sources. Often, they produce less pollution than gasoline or diesel.
Ethanol is an alcohol-based fuel made by fermenting and distilling starch crops, such as corn. It can also be made from "cellulosic biomass" such as trees and grasses.
Biodiesel is derived from vegetable oils, such as soybeans, and animal fats. It is safe, biodegradable and produces fewer air pollutants than petroleum-based diesel. Biodiesel can be blended with petroleum diesel. Common blends include B2 (2% biodiesel), B5 and B20. B2 and B5 can be used safely in most diesel engines.
