Madison O'Connell

Summer 2020 - Student Employee of the Summer - Madison O'Connell - Student Success Intern, Dining & Culinary

Mary Jo Zeiser, Maddie's supervisor, states, "STAR was virtual, which required having 1-2 sessions a week on how to use your dining plan and how to apply for a job. In the beginning of May, I attended every session. As the summer got busier, we were doing three virtual sessions per week. Maddie picked up the speaking parts for the sessions, the extra time let me concentrate on central hiring. Maddie also helped with Jumpstart. Since all the students were working remotely, this was not an easy task. This was the first year since we started five years ago that the student assigned for the summer had completed all the tasks by July 1. Maddie also sits on the Student Life Advisory Board and uses her experiences to answer questions and make suggestions for Student Life."

Sam Donohue

Fall 2020 - Student Employee of the Semester - Sam Donohue - Student Office Coordinator, University Residences (Earhart)

Kimberly Lanoue, Sam's supervisor, states, "As a Student Office Coordinator in Earhart, Sam consistently exceeds his job expectations in several ways. Sam goes out of his way to come to the office multiple times a day to have discussions, train and meet with student staff. Sam practices our Steps to Leaps Pillar/Leadership and Professional Development everyday. He works with office staff members daily providing guidance and training to assure office procedures are understood and completed in a standardized way. He is an exceptional communicator, sending emails, text and group chats in timely, professional means. Sam never hesitates to have difficult conversations with staff when needed. He is consistent and fair with all staff. Student Staff enjoy working with him, respect him, and value his guidance."

Katelyn Ohlwine

Fall 2020 - Student Employee of the Semester - Katelyn Ohlwine - Student Hiring Manager, Dining & Culinary

Mary Jo Zeiser, Katelyn's supervisor, states, "With central Hiring being a new process, many things have been implemented as we've moved forward. One of these was finding a solution for interview signups. Katelyn volunteered to set up the Sign-up Genius every week. She has shown leadership by attending job fairs, talking to potential students, giving presentation, and answering questions. A unique contribution that Katelyn had is she had worked at Ford Dining Court as a freshman then at 1 Bowl as a sophomore. Her experience in two locations is very beneficial when doing virtual job fairs. Katelyn is also willing to assist other areas in Dining & Culinary. She has helped the Student Success Interns on several occasions with employment tables. Without Katelyn, Dining & Culinary would not have been able to process 600 plus applicants we received."

Fall 2020 - Outstanding New Student Employee - Natalie Skillington - Student Office Coordinator, University Residences (Cary)

Karen Stewart Gaither, Natalie's supervisor, states, "Natalie-she likes to go by Tony-was a new hire for the Fall. She had this amazing work ethic right off. At the beginning of the semester, when the package load volume was so high, Tony would show up early and help get packages scanned in. She takes every shift not covered by our dwindling staff. With the recent event of mailroom going 24/7 until Dec 20, Tony has added so many hours to get us through. She's always helpful to anyone coming because of a problem with receiving their package. I am so grateful for her."
