STEAM-CIRT Summary & Trends for December 2006
December 2006 Summary & Trends
Overall the number of events reported to the STEAM-CIRT remained nearly the same as November, while
the total number of actual IT Incidents decreased by 48% as predicted in last month’s report. The decrease is
likely due to a much smaller number of IRC Bot infections discovered during the semester break when
student machines are typically removed from Purdue networks.
The month of December did not bring any significant new threats and continued trends from the previous
month. IRC Bot infections continue to be prevalent, although muted in volume, and compromised machines
are often used to send spam and attack other machines to increase the size of the Bot network further.
The STEAM-CIRT expects the relative number of IT Incidents to increase slightly in January as the new
semester begins and students return to campus.
