Data Destruction Awareness and You

CMD Project

The object of the Data Destruction Awareness and You Council for Manager Development project is to identify key resources and prepare an educational blueprint for ensuring that all members of the University community are aware of their data destruction obligations. The mission of the Data Destruction Awareness and You project is to engage and enable all Purdue staff, facility, students and alumni to be active participants in protecting University data and the personal information of University constituents by properly disposing of such data (in whatever form) at the end of its useful life.

As part of this project, the project team developed and created a sample Data Destruction Awareness and You website, which is intended to be a one-stop resource for information related to data destruction at Purdue University. The web site includes "how to" steps for identifying the classification of data, its retention period and archival usefulness, and the proper destruction mechanism. The website also includes links to additional references and reading materials should visitors wish to learn more about various aspects of the data lifecycle at Purdue University.

The charter for the Data Destruction Awareness and You project is available [HERE].

In addition to the sample website, the Data Destruction Awareness and You project deliverables include a sample marketing and communications plan for effectively communicating data destruction awareness to members of the University community. It is anticipated that any group that would wish to further develop the Data Destruction Awareness and You project could use the sample communications plan as a starting point for developing marketing materials.

The sample communications plan for the Data Destruction Awareness and You project is available [HERE].

The Data Destruction Awareness and You project team wishes to thank executive sponsor, James S. Almond, Interim Executive Vice President for Business Services and Finance and Treasurer, for his assistance during this project. In addition, the team wishes to thank the many members of the University community who offered information and guidance throughout the project. Finally, the team wishes to thank their supervisors for encouraging participation in the Council for Manager Development program.
