CS professor publishes new innovation in digital sketching

Computer Science associate professor Daniel Aliaga’s latest paper shows new, user-friendly visualization programming that can help draftsmen, architects, artists or anyone with a passion for designing buildings.

“Interactive Sketching of Urban Procedural Models” reads that this new programming “allows the user to quickly and easily author procedural 3D building models. The user only performs interactive sketching and our system automatically generates the procedural model and its parameters yielding the sketched shape.”

Aliaga collaborated with Purdue colleagues Gen Nishida, Ignacio Garcia-Dorado and Bedrich Benes as well as with Adrien Bousseau, a PhD student at the Inria Sophia-Antipolis – the French Institute for Research in Computer Science and Automation. The paper was presented at the Association for Computing Machinery’s SIGGRAPH computer graphics and interactive techniques conference in Anaheim, California, back in July before being published in ACM Transactions on Graphics journal.

Like your smartphone guessing what you want to type during a text message, Aliaga and his colleague’s work does that for designers. As a line is drawn digitally, the software accurately finishes the line quickly based on previous lines drawn. After a few projects, the program will learn what windows the building designer prefers. Instead of drawing window after window, the windows multiply with just a touch of the electronic pen on a tablet or click of the mouse. Towers are quickly created in just a few strokes thanks to the program’s memory. The more Aliaga’s software is used, the better it gets.

“ … By using our approach, non-expert users can generate complex buildings in just a few minutes,” Aliaga wrote.

Aliaga’s work combines art, computer graphics and machine learning. Projects can be completed quickly and expertly.
