Parents, kids program side-by-side at CS event
12-03-2012
Computer Science opened up one of its labs to area kids and their parents for a unique opportunity to program side-by-side on Dec. 1.
“Are You Smarter Than Your Fifth Grader?” saw sons and daughters working with mom, dad and even grandpa on a complex computer program to complete a game of “Winter Mad Libs” from scratch. The workshop used Alice software to help create the seasonal program.Jessica Berger, an area science teacher, led the workshop while several CS students assisted the family teams. The workshop hosted 24 family members in all.
Unlike the Jeff Foxworthy hosted game show “Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?,” this event focused on intergenerational teamwork and learning together.
Families as far away as Carmel participated and parents left impressed with Lawson’s facilities as well as their child’s computational savvy.
