$2.5 million professorship established in the Purdue Department of Mathematics

Andy Zoltners has gifted $1.5 million to the Department of Mathematics to establish the Andris A. Zoltners Distinguished Professorship.

While the total is $1.5 million, there is a $1 million match from the Purdue Faculty Excellence Challenge match so that the total fund will be at $2.5 million.

"Andy Zoltners, our distinguished alum, received his M.S. from the Department of Mathematics in 1969. He has generously given us in the past to support undergraduate and graduate students in mathematics,"
said Laszlo Lempert, department head of Mathematics. "The endowed chair he is now creating represents a tremendous opportunity for the department and it will significantly enhance our excellence in research."

Zoltners, who has donated funds to Mathematics in the past, is an emeritus professor at Northwestern University’s Kellogg Graduate School of Management. He is also a founder and co-chairman of ZS Associates, a global sales and marketing consulting firm in Chicago.

After his years at Purdue, Zoltners developed integer-programming algorithms during his PhD studies at Carnegie Mellon University. His research has found solutions to a variety of sales and marketing challenges. Today, ZS has offices around the world and serves dozens of companies and industries.

After all of his success, Zoltners has not forgotten the impact Purdue math professors had on him. He is hoping that strong influence and guidance will be retained for future generations of mathematicians.

“To be competitive in world markets, the US needs to produce the best educated scientists and mathematicians in the world,” Zoltners said. “Our universities are still the best in the world at scientific education and research. I am hoping in a small way to continue to build this asset and enhance the leadership.”

The gift is a huge boost for the Mathematics department as well as the College of Science.

"Dr. Zoltners' generous gift will help attract and retain spectacular faculty and research," said Jeff Roberts, Frederick L. Hovde dean of the College of Science. "These funds will help ensure a fulfilling educational experience for students through the teaching and research output from the Zoltners Distinguished Professor.”

"We are proud to call Dr. Zoltners a College of Science alumnus and we are proud to have his name connected to the Department of Mathematics. We thank him immensely."
