College of Science Young Alumni go yard at Big 10 Night at Wrigley Field

CHICAGO – With temperatures in the low 70s and barely a cloud in the sky, Sept. 3 was a great night for baseball and some College of Science alumni bonding.

The Young Alumni chapter of the College of Science Alumni group met at Red Ivy Sports Club before a showdown between the Chicago Cubs and the Miami Marlins. Young Alumni consists of former students who graduated in the last 10 years.

After an hour of mingling at Red Ivy, a Purdue friendly sports bar containing numerous Boilermaker flags and banners on its walls, 33 alumni and their friends and family walked three minutes down Clark Avenue to historic Wrigley Stadium. The departments of Statistics, Computer Science, Chemistry and Mathematics were represented.

Sept. 3 was Big 10 night at the ballpark and Purdue was out in full force. Jim Rio, president of the Purdue Club of Chicago alumni group, threw out the first pitch as Purdue alumni bought the most tickets versus the other Big 10 schools.

The College of Science was seated near the left field corner and enjoyed a close game until the young Marlins got to the Cubs’ bullpen in the eighth inning. The Marlins held on to a 6-2 victory. Overall attendance was 30,024 with many of those coming courtesy of Boiler Nation.

Purdue alumni in attendance received limited edition Purdue-friendly Cubs hats in familiar – and beloved – black and gold.
