Purdue Day of Giving was a huge success for the College of Science and for Purdue University as a whole. The 24-hour fundraising event took place from midnight to 11:59 p.m. April 29. Most of the donations were online and social media driven.

The College of Science drew a grand total of $358,092 from 277 generous gifts. While the total was down from the college’s $1.06 million total, the number of gifts was 48 more than 2014.

The college raised the 11th most out of 42 Purdue institutions involved in Purdue Day of Giving but Science had the eighth most gifts.

The money raised will be spread among the seven College of Science departments and diversity programming.

Overall, Purdue brought in $13,703,219 from 9,626 gifts. That smashes the 2014 total of $7.5 million raised from 6,500 donations.

The College of Science had a full day of hyping the event starting with doughnuts, bagels and coffee in the morning in the Lawson Commons. Then the College of Science Road Show – a Purdue-centrically decorated golf cart – drove around to Lilly, Wetherill, Hampton, Physics, Haas and Math buildings to deliver cookies, Purdue swag and Day of Giving cheer.

Festivities then moved over to the Boiler Bash event at Ross-Ade stadium where College of Science staff applied custom temporary tattoos to students. The tattoos had the College of Science “pinwheel” emblem as well as the seven letters that spell out “science” with each letter representing one of the college’s seven departments. One C was a crescent moon representing Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences while the other was the Periodic Table of Elements’ C for carbon. The I was a strand of DNA to symbolize Biological Sciences.

Perhaps the highlight of the day occurred when Dr. Jeff Roberts, the Frederick L. Hovde Dean of the College of Science, zip-lined during the Boiler Bash festivities. Keeping his suit jacket and tie on, it was an epic moment.

“Gentlemen always zip-line with their jacket and tie on,” Roberts quipped minutes before taking the plunge alongside the College of Education Dean Maryann Santos de Barona.

Thank you to all who took the plunge and donated to the College of Science on during the 2015 Purdue Day of Giving!
