Effective October 1, 2008, Purdue adopted a revised policy on research misconduct. The new policy can be found at:
Purdue University Policy VIII.3.1 supercedes and replaces Executive Memorandum C-22, which was issued in September 1991 to implement a federal requirement that all institutions receiving NIH or NSF support for research must have and enforce a policy assuring the integrity of research at the institution. In FY 2000, the federal Office of Science and Technology Policy issued a new federal-wide policy on research misconduct, which included a revised definition of research misconduct. All federal agencies that support research were instructed to implement the federal-wide policy and new misconduct definition, and grantee institutions were required to assure that their institutional policies were consistent with the new policy and definition.
Purdue’s new policy on research misconduct incorporates the revised federal definition of research misconduct, introduces several other new elements, and provides greatly enhanced procedural guidance on responses to allegations of potential research misconduct.
Among the new elements in the new policy are the definition of the role and responsibility of the University Research Integrity Officer (RIO) and the creation of a standing University Committee on Research Integrity. Under the new policy, allegations of potential research misconduct must be communicated to the RIO and/or Provost, and will be accepted via any means of communication. Individuals selected from the University Committee on Research Integrity will serve as members of inquiry committees charged with the evaluation of allegations of potential research misconduct that satisfy specific inquiry criteria stated in the policy.
