Enabling Sustainable Development
An Industrial Perspective
Dr. John R. Smith –Division Manager Environmental Science & Sustainability Technology Alcoa Inc.
One of the more popular definitions of sustainability can be traced to a 1987 UN conference and is given as that which can "meet present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs". Further defining sustainability implies an equal balance among Economic Growth, Social Responsibility and Environmental Protection. In this regard, an industrial perspective will be presented as to how science and technology are being used to enable sustainable development and growth within industry, with focus on the Aluminum Industry. Specific examples will be given to illustrate both the challenges and opportunities that exist, and the approaches being used by industry to embrace sustainability and create worldwide growth and development.
